Preparing a little montage of Schiele, Picasso, and Van Gogh, made of postcards gathered from museums in Vienna (the Leopold), Madrid (the Reina Sofia), and Amsterdam (the Van Gogh). Sadly, I’m leaving out the one on the far left (a example of Schiele’s excellently angular depiction of the human figure) since this is for my office on campus, and, well… I do my biennial mandatory harassment training, and will err on the side of caution to avoid offense, lawsuits, possibly both.

Nice pix! Last Fall when at a scientific meeting I saw a life-changing exhibit of works by Picasso and Cocteau–“Cocteau trifft Picasso” at the Picasso Museum in Munster.
Perhaps if you added a Michleangelo “David” postcard your display would be more clearly art and not something else?

I love Schiele; the exhibition at the Courtauld last year was fantastic. Have you read the Crofts book http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Pornographer-Vienna-Lewis-Crofts/dp/1905847122? It’s not amazing literature but it got me completely hooked on the art.
Thanks Jennifer! I appreciate the comment. I think that if the montage as it is now was hinging right over my desk where a visiting student kind of had it “in their face” while in my office, I’d not have even that piece in it…. But since it is sort of across the room in the more obviously “art” side of the office, I think/hope it’ll be ok. (I’ve moved to a larger space that allows for this sort of spatial differentiation, happily.)
I would even pass on the little one…I agree with both of you that the naked human form in good art is a wonderful thing…fig leaves make me very sad…and if I saw that statue in a professor’s office I would do a jig. [Clifford if I saw all of those postcards in your office there would be no problem, because I know you – I am grateful there are people like you in physics, extremely supportive of women in science and a feminist. It’s hard to overstate how grateful.] But in the office of a professor I didn’t know I would feel a little uncomfortable to see even good art portraying the nude female form. Maybe from difficult experiences in the past and projection. But I imagine I am in the minority there. Anyway, your taste in art is exquisite.

I don’t either…. But you know how remarkably risk-averse the tone of those training things are, so sadly I’m erring on the side of caution. One person’s really good art might be another’s offense to a protected category.
at least it shouldn’t, but, well, you know….:-) Anyhow nice selection of paintings love all of them!

Hey Clifford Johnson how about the postcard in the lower-left corner of the panel? In the light of our mandatory harassment training I suspect that even that one might be rather dangerous…am I wrong? 😉
