Hard to express my feelings about this news. Quincy Jones is a massive part of the foundations of my formative years (in so much music across genres and media). Inevitable passing, of course, but no less sad… Thanks for the music and inspiration Quincy!

When my daughter was 3 (she’s now 26), we went to L.A. to visit relatives. We told her that the sea was salty, so she announced her determination to “drink it all up.” My brother and I held her hands as we walked in the sand toward the ocean. I scooped up some salt water in my hands and offered it to her. She took a sip, spit it out, and announced that she was no longer interested in drinking it all up–that one sip of salty water was enough for her. Three-year-olds don’t understand the immensity of the ocean until the moment they realize they can’t begin to drink it all up.
