Bcycle

bcycleHey! B all you can B and look at the Bcycle site and then go to the bit that says “I want it more” and add your city and zip and click that box that says tell your mayor.

This is *exactly* what I was wishing for a couple of years ago in an earlier post or two*. (See here and here.) Also fits nicely with a more limited plan a friend is working on that I’m hoping to help push forward… Will tell you more when I get permission to do so.

This is Excellent!!!! Let’s join in to help make it really happen.

(And for those of you in my research field… yes, I know. I thought that same joke immediately. Will dual cities have Acycles instead?)

I just tried the Montreal bikeshare a couple weeks ago when visiting. It was pretty awesome, and I saw quite a few people using it…to be fair, in neighborhoods where students and/or hipsters reside.

I’m glad somebody made the Calabi-Yau joke so that I didn’t have to. Wear a helmet and don’t calculate while riding, young Jedi, lest you find your brain wrapping that cycle.

Thanks! That is great to hear. People are definitely beginning to think hard about it. A friend of mine entered a bike-sharing scheme for the USC campus into a competition today and when he showed up at the display booth he’d been assigned… there was another entry next to his (entirely due to an alphabetical ordering accident) proposing the same sort of thing (not as impressively, I say, but I am biased…). So it is in the air!

Montreal, where I’ve been living a few years, started the “bixi” (bike + taxi, get it?) system this summer, which is a lot like the Velib system (largely based on it, I think). It’s been so popular that they had to ramp up the schedule of placing new bikes and stations, and I read a news article that several cities in the NE US have inquired about having Montreal and its contractor run bixi systems for them. It can definitely work out!

    Excellent news!

It will be interesting also to calculate the periods over the A and B cycles 🙂
