Last Night in Aspen

gin gimlet at little nell's

… for this year, anyway. The evening out ended with a trip to my primary hideout* of this year’s visit, the nature of which you can deduce from the photo. The barkeep at The Little Nell, Michelle, really knows how to make a decent gin gimlet. I asked for it to be made with Hendrick’s, of course, and she understood the importance of putting in just the right amount of freshly squeezed lime juice as well as Rose’s. It was about as good as I like to make it for myself, in fact…

Evening out started earlier with nipping out to see the Bourne Ultimatum, which is about as good a film of its sort as I’ve seen in a while. Just brilliantly done. Clever, thoughtful plotting and attention to detail all the way through. Plus, I am always taken in by well made American-style spy-vs-spy movies that are made with lots of European settings and flavour. It works so well in this case. It’s the tight spaces and the crowds. They add so much tension. Nothing like fast car chases in small cars on narrow streets in Europe for getting the pulse up. Remember Ronin?

Now to put those equations to some use before getting to bed…

Mmmm, Little Nell. Last December/January my (twin) brother and I were within a month of our 21st b-day, so we stood outside shaking our fists and saying “someday… someday…”

Hey, we made the barkeep laugh. 😛

Oh my, this book is wonderful. Truly Wonderful. Michael Pollan’s “Second Nature”. Gardening and Culture intertwined. Marvelously written. I was moved to tears in many places -tears of mirth (he’s so funny – a master craftsman when it comes to word choices – to make serious points and humourous ones) and also the other sort, at the end, when he finally shows you so much of what he’s learned and still learning about the intersection of gardening and culture in the context of his own garden. Brilliant writing. I could go on (culture’s not really the right word), but I’ve just got back from Aspen (yes, there’s a missing 24 hours -someone misremembered his flight day-) and have a busy day tomorrow.

That covers the drink, the snacks and the jottings. What is the book that dare not, or is too modest to, show its face?

  6. Francis Caestecker says:

    Are those oriental crackers? Yummmmmmmm.

  7. Clifford says:

I don’t smoke, and never have. Would not be able to have cigarette butts anywhere near that close to me.

    CB:- Glad you enjoyed Ratatouille!

They appear to be snacks. Illinois just made smoking illegal indoors as well. Just fine with me.

Are those nuts in the dish at the top left of the picture or a nasty pile of cigarette butts? Smoking in bars is now illegal up here in Washington State. I saw the Disney Ratoutille (sp) movie the other day and enjoyed it. But I have very low standards for movies.
