Chalcedon Checkerspots

Fantastic hike yesterday. More later, perhaps, but now I want to write about a couple of other things. In the meantime, here are some lovely butterflies that obligingly posed for the blog on some (type of sage?) flowers:

Chalcedon checkerspots

They’re (I believe) Chalcedon Checkerspots. Excellent name*.

(*They are sometimes called Snowberry Checkerspots. Also an excellent name.)

    Hi,

    Thanks.

You know, I don’t think I’ve seen them in Griffith either. Curious.

These guys were further East, in fact. Upper Arroyo trail in the San Gabriels.

    Best,

The flower looks like Eriodictylon crassifolium, aka yerba santa. It’s in the same family as Phacelia.

Did you photograph these checkerspots in the Sta. Monica Mtns.?? I’ve been searching at Griffith Park for them w/ no luck (though they’re common west of 405…

That’s really incredible without an SLR, cameras have come a long way (not taking anything from the still hands etc.).

  6. Clifford says:

Very still hands, waiting for the wind to die down and the butterflies to get settled. I just used the only digital I have, which is not an SLR, but just a small (and my now, horribly out of date) pocket one: The “Digital Elph”, by Canon. The Powershot S230. It has a macro lens setting for closer shots.

I do mean to get a digital SLR one day (there’s a huge amount that I can’t do easily with this), but there’s quite a bit that can be done with the simpler cameras.

    Thanks!
