You may have heard that there are an estimated 1 billion Painted Lady butterflies passing through the Los Angeles area right now. Just after sunrise this morning I watched them begin their daily swarming. Fascinating! Later, just after lunch, I captured some quick shots of this one for you…

Hi,
Well, they seem to flutter around in good measure, but not so much that they are settling on cars or anything like that. They go from tree to tree or bush, I imagine. At the peak it was the case that the air seemed full of them at times, but we’re talking about seeing dozens in the space of minutes… That still leaves plenty of gaps! I think this year was much more intense than in recent years. It really was quite amazing to see.
Wow, that must be amazing but every year that has got to be crazy. But does your car get covered with them when driving. If there is 1 billion there how many are there everywhere. Also loved the speech at the institute.
