With the new semester and a return to the routine of campus life comes taking the subway train regularly in the morning again, which I’m pleased to return to. It means odd characters, snippets of all sort of conversations, and – if I get a seat and a good look – the opportunity to practice a bit of quick sketching of faces. I’m slow and rusty from no recent regular practice, so I imagine that it was mostly luck that helped me get a reasonable likeness done of this person on the Expo line on Friday morning. (Click for larger view.) I think I had about ten minutes to lay down the essentials, and then I cleaned up and strengthened some lines later on, and completed the hair, while leaving the lower portions very basically rendered. She seems familiar actually – I think I might have sketched this person before – and/or I ought to be careful since she may be a colleagues. We got off at the same USC stop.

@ZoochosisCOM “I am chairman of the department of Hitler studies…” Yes. It is an excellent opening piece indeed!

@asymptotia You’ve probably read it, but the opening of “White Noise” is a wonderful study of the first winsome days of a new college year.
