One of the star items that I brought out during a small food and wine gathering at my home some nights back. I was so pleased to be able to find it in a local shop. If you’re not familiar with soft, fragrant French cheeses with wonderful flavours, it is hard to imagine a better place to start than epoisses. Even those assembled who thought they would not like such a cheese were grabbing a bite or few.
It did not last long…

Thanks Clifford!
Really?!
I can’t believe that. I can think of several awfully smelly cheeses an order of magnitude more noticeable.
Oh.. maybe by “smelly” they mean “has a smell”, as opposed to “smells bad”.
Either way, the payoff on the taste is indisputable, I’d say.

I enjoyed the epoisses alot, and am thrilled you had the chance to pick one up at the Silver Lake Cheese Shop 🙂
But it’s amusing to think of it as a friendly introduction to the world of fromage — British scientists concluded that it is one of the planet’s “smelliest cheeses”:

. . . and noted that it is banned on French public transport!
Laura:
Although not a resident of that ‘hood, I feel the need to do my bit to help them stomp out the growing Angeleno habit of referring to Silver Lake as Silverlake. Hope you don’t mind.:)
Mary:
🙂 Good Luck with everything!

Oh, the torture of having to give up soft cheese during pregnancy! I have coped admirably with no alcohol, seafood, peanuts and limits to my coffee intake, but the cheese is a real struggle! Not much longer, thankfully!
I will need to visit that shop pronto. I have another foodie friend who just moved to Silverlake. Let the food trips begin! 🙂
