Well, today (depending upon how you count*) is a big day. Major day. Are you as excited and worried as I am?
Yes. It is the release of a movie version of Watchmen. I don’t know exactly how to be about this. One the one hand, it is certain to be visually wonderful, but will Zack Snyder make a pig’s ear of bringing out all the wonder, joy, sadness, and hope that the wonderful graphic novel contains? It is a bit scary. But I can’t resist, either.
If you don’t know about this wonderful piece of work (the graphic novel), as -strangely- so many don’t, please consider going out and getting it now and reading it. Suspend the usual (tedious) snobbery you may have about “comics”, and just read it without prejudice. You might enjoy it. If you don’t think you’ll get around to it, but might see the movie, then avoid all the discussion, reviews and advertising that will be taking place, and go to the theatre (a good one) with no information and an open mind. Just let it wash over you all fresh. Best way to see a movie, especially if it is a genre you are not familiar with. (I hope it is actually reasonably good at capturing the spirit of the novel, and that I’m not sending you to see a dud. I think I’ll trust Snyder and his team, for now.)
The above snaps are from the lobby of my favourite movie theatre complex, the Arclight in Hollywood. They’ve got some of the costumes on display. Overheard from a couple standing near me:
Woman: “Oh, that’s Batman isn’t it? Didn’t that come out last year?”
Man (forcing himself to steady his voice, which is still dripping with exasperation and resignation): “No…. no, it is not Batman…”
That’s sort of funny to me, for rather a lot of reasons. This is a conversation I expect will be happening all over the planet in the next few days. Listen out for it. Poor guy. It is kind of hard to explain in a short way. I feel his pain…

*Doors open just before midnight, but film starts just after, to (I expect) qualify for the 6th March release date, you see.
(Whew! …. wipes brow in great sigh of relief)
Enjoy the movie!
I am going Friday night and am having a hard time concentrating on other stuff in the meantime…
Er… thanks for the idea. I think I’ll pass though. Much to do…

Hmmm….A quick call to the airline and you could be on the 7 O’clock flight to Seattle, greeted at the gate by mwah, whisked off to dinner in the Space Needle, enjoying the view of the skyline at night in a breezy mist. After dinner cognac and arrive at the Midnight showing. Relax, laugh, review the movie for its’ comparison to the book, then dash back to SeaTac for the 3am return flight home and in bed before dawn. A few hours nap before going out into the new day (plus the quick nap on the plane) refreshed and invigorated for having done something so spontaneous and fun!
Oh well, all the things you could have done, if only you had gotten those expense reports in sooner.
Have a happy day anyway!
Cheers!
