Wanna see my new car? Well, ok, I’ll grant you a glance:
Ok, I’m just joking. I saw this in the Peterson Automotive Museum here in Los Angeles, the other day. It’s one of the many famous constructions of Ed Roth, from the 60s. This one is called “Surfite” and is from 1964. Some of you may even recall buying models of this car a long time back, probably as a child. Click on the picture at the right for a view of a toy model of it in a promotonal poster. There were some other interesting, amusing, (and some, rather lovely) cars in there too, and I’ll show you a few later on. I just thought this was amusing and so am sharing it with you first. You can read a bit more on Ed Roth at the above museum link, as they have a special exhibition on right now.
One thing I was interested to see nearby was the original design drawings by Ed Newton. Click right for larger. The final construction of Ed Roth’s is based on (but not identical to) these drawings. Always interesting to see how these things turn out, isn’t it?

As long as ratfinks of the world, both new and old, still enjoy his creations..Big Daddy will continue to live…and who’s to say something new might not come out of the cave…?
The design itself hasn’t been much improved in the last 42 years it seems. The latest models from Daimler-Benz/Chrysler’s GEM series look interestingly similar. Of course i prefer being seen in the eL XD model for its hip coolness.
120mph on the freeway?? 😉 I think not.
cute! Looks loke Donald Duck might have used it to escape from Disneyworld 🙂
