Well, I noticed a resonance over the last couple of days. In pictures:
I know what you’re thinking. Another exotic place, right? Actually, no more exotic than Los Angeles. Yes, as I keep saying, it is not all concrete, despite what people say. This is essentially in the middle of the Los Angeles area, overlooking the city. The lovely Griffith Park, at the top of Mount Hollywood, where I was hiking with a friend and came upon this scene. Did not have enough camera to make the best of it, but this will do. As confirmation of the central location, you can see the Hollywood sign in the top right hand corner (click for closeup).
Next:
The Rainwater Bluegrass band. They’re part of the wonderful weekly fresh food shopping party that is the Hollywood Farmer’s Market. Stopped to snap this while making a beeline for some purple hearts (been looking for those for months and months now!)
And since we’re on the whole ranchy-cowboy-y theme, this gives me an excuse to have a mouth-watering trip into the recent past. One of the things (besides great physics!) that I go back to Aspen for whenever I can:
This is at Woody Creek Tavern. Can’t recall when I first started going there, but I love it. A not-too-long cycle out from Aspen on a Sunday lunchtime to get a table here. Astonishingly good margueritas to start (unfortunately overpriced…but you have one anyway… takes the edge off the long slow uphill on the way back). Slap-in-the-face brilliant guacamole and chips on the side….. And without fail, I order the huevos rancheros. The best I’ve had anywhere.

Hey,
Id just like to say that you should thank your lucky stars that you have such good accessibility to fantastic Mexican food! I live in Australia and my grandfather is Mexican but now too old and ill to cook, i haven’t had good huevos in about 8 years because there is a nil to none industry for Mexican food here. Sadly when i do find a Mexican restaurant in my travels around Australia, it fall so far under par that i often suspect ive been served the contents of a McDonalds trash dumpster. How i wish to be in your shoes.

Hi Spyder,
Sigh. Saying that it is the best I’ve had anywhere (which takes into account lots of other factors affecting a meal, such as the company and the atmosphere) does not mean that I don’t appreciate the several other places that also do excellent huevos rancheros. Yes, there’s a huge amount of places which are great in this area – obviously, given the location and populace.
Thanks.

All i can suggest is that you get out more in LA, especially east of the I-5 and south of the Pasadena/210 route, moving east on I-10. There are places in Montebello and Bell Gardens, Fortuna and Beaumont that serve some of the most amazing huevos and chili rellenos.
