Breathing

faith machine by robert reynolds

This is a piece by Robert Reynolds, currently on display at the Bert Green Fine Art Gallery in downtown LA. It is called Faith Machine. You’ll have to ask him what he’s trying to depict (Bert, the gallery owner, gave me a bit of a run down, but I don’t want to garble it), but I loved it simply because it’s a working, moving machine, and those bellows are just wonderful, with a motor turning at the back driving a piston that pumps the bellows, blowing smoke (or something) up through the seats (which are actually old school seats). There are some interesting messages in there, evidently, and I’ll leave you to work out your own angles.

I found the sound of the pumping bellows and turning wheel to be very biological in its effect, and quite hypnotic. I made a short video and you can view it below. (I hope that the artist does not mind – I’ll admit that I did not ask permission to display this, so I might eventually have to take it down. [Update: got permission!])

This piece was among my favourites of those I saw yesterday in the monthly downtown Art Walk. Oh, and you can buy it from the artist, if you act fast – I saw that it was for sale.

More on yesterday’s event later. I’d better work on the several tasks I need to complete today.

This is great. But with respect to Kate Bush, I have to say I would consider her an “acquired taste”. (one which I for better or worse have not acquired)

I love that Robert brings the arcane to life in this exotic and bizarre yet playful piece. My favorite too.

Ha… Actually, in the back of my mind was indeed Kate Bush’s song, once I’d thought of the post’s title… I have it in my head. Interesting that you caught it too.

Here’s her (well, really, pleasantly bizarre) video for the song:

After the post the other day, and the title of this one, I thought maybe there would be another Kate Bush reference! So, I guess my comment is not relevant, but I love “Breathing.”
