A Farmer’s Market at USC

(hollywood farmer's) market day basket of cvjFantastic news! There’s going to be a farmer’s market on campus at USC. The first one is on Thursday this week, and rumour has it that it is expected to be monthly! If anyone has more information about this, please let me know in the comments or by email. (Right, enlargeable image of one of the results of my weekly visits to the Hollywood Farmer’s Market. More here.)

Here’s the announcement for Thursday:

“USC’s first on campus Farmer’s Market is coming next THURSDAY Feb. 21st to McCarthy Quad! There will be fresh, locally grown produce, cheese and other healthy snacks, as well as cool canvas bags for sale! Discretionary is accepted too, so get excited!”

Time and Place
Date: Thursday, February 21, 2008
Time: 12:00pm – 4:00pm
Location: McCarthy Quad by PSX

This is just a fantastic step forward for the campus, and the surrounding community, and the connection between the two. In addition, this is a great opportunity for many on campus to get a taste of really good food produced locally, and perhaps develop a lifelong relationship with local, good, nutritious food (and the powerful idea of us eaters having more direct contact with those who produce what we eat). I’m very excited! I can’t go, as I’ll be out of town, so promise me you’ll (perhaps with a re-usable carry-bag) go along and buy something!

I can report that the apples *were* super tasty.

(Being on the wrong coast today, I was not able to go.)

That’s a bit weird… I wonder what is going on with that? Did it seem well attended, at least? Perhaps it will grow and get better if they see people supporting it…

I bought apples (pink lady and fuji). But I have to say, it was not as large or farmer-oriented (ie the stalls were staffed by people from Trojan hospitality) as I was hoping.

  5. Michelle says:

    Awesome. Hope it sticks around!

In Colorado, the snow is melting, we’re moving into mud month, and I put up a “Spring is just around the corner” display because I’m tired of hearing people grouse about winter because after all, the snow *is* melting. Fresh produce is still months away.
