Cosmic Holey Moley!

A quick note of interest, particularly to those interested in these science outreach matters:

Last night’s “Cosmic Holes” episode on the History Channel (part of their new science series “The Universe” – see here and here) apparently had an unusually huge audience. Word must be getting around that the History Channel’s got this fun and informative new series, and it is spreading beyond their standard viewers it seems. Apparently the episode’s first showing at 9:00pm got well over a million viewers, which I’ve heard the Channel was rather pleased about.

If you saw it, thanks for supporting it, and I hope you enjoyed what you saw. Stay tuned for what I expect will be several more interesting episodes. In fact, last night after the new episode I saw a rerun of the first one of the new series “Alien Planets”, where they told the story of some of the science of the discoveries of extra-solar planets. It was really quite good.

i have been watching this series for awhile. it is both informative and inspiring.

while my career has been in the project management of information technology, i have always had a curiosity for physics, especially astronomy. this series makes me feel like i can wrap my mere-mortal mind around the amazing theories and discoveries made by galileo to einstein to hawking and all in between and those to come.

after watching the first episode i was excited to begin reading galileo. i am reading Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences which is the first part of a series called On the Shoulders of Giants. i have been pleased to run across a couple of concepts that i wouldn’t have understood had i not first seen them in this television series.

the topics of the show have also made for great conversation with members of my family and friends who share my fascination of physics, science, and knowledge in general. i call and occasionally can reveal some great “new” discovery with them. we are then off to research and delve deep into our new found information so that we can impress and feed our curiosities even more the next time.

i am now a stay-home-mom and appreciate the information and inspiration of this series. it has given me a hobby (albeit a bit unconventional) that i am very excited about.

thank you for your contribution to the show! your site will keep me reading for quite some time 🙂
