I learned today that there was a problem with RIM’s Blackberry network for about ten hours yesterday, and the wireless devices were cut off from the mother ship, or each other, or the hive mind, or whatever. (see e.g. a Reuters story here.) My thoughts went out to some of my friends at the PeRIMeter Institute in Canada, such as Bee. I hope the withdrawal pangs were not too severe!
I find it particularly sychronicitous (if it’s not a word, it should be one) therefore that probably during some of that outage I went for a bit of a walk to clear my head last night and found myself at Pinkberry (see earlier post). I had a small “original” flavour with…. blackberries:
It was only looking through some pictures just now that I connected this with the news today of last night’s outage.

Yes, I read some of the articles. I recall that emails arrived with a couple of minutes delay most of the day, but that was about it. However, the newspaper articles really made me think. I mean, it seems the ‘mothership’ is a hub in the business network which apparently is more important than many thought.
Well, it was a huge news story here, just look on the web. Perhaps being so close to the mothership you were somehow protected. Alternatively, maybe it was only in America and somehow Canada was ok….?

Hi Clifford,
thanks… if I hadn’t read your post, I wouldn’t have noticed there was a problem. Indeed, I just scanned through my yesterday’s inbox, which shows 42 messages pretty evenly distributed over 24 hours, there definitely was no 10 hour gap (that’s the time the messages actually were received). So. I don’t know, but I guess, if all the BBs had stopped working here, I’d have noticed… (70 totally disoriented physicists on the hallway, convinced that the end of the world is near, I can imagine it 😉 ). Best,
BBB
Oh, how a small cup of ice cream can brilliantly serve as a momentary escape from Reality—even with a few blackberries on top, I suppose…;)
I just had some fresh strawberries shipped from Oxnard that were amazingly tasty. I haven’t had that quality in a commercial berry in a very long time. Maybe there is a bit of hope in the produce section afterall. I have to wait three more months for the local picking season up here to eat fresh tasty organic rasp and black berries.

I know the feeling, trying to find a connection to the world wide web. I like the Hive thought as quarky as it may sound 🙂
