The time: Saturday just past, just before 4:00pm.
The location (wide): The the splendid old May Company building, at Wilshire and Fairfax. It’s now the LACMA West building. (LACMA: Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Image: Carol M. Highsmith)
Isn’t the building just great? So utterly LA:
The location (zoom in): The rooftop penthouse of said building. What were we doing? Initially, waiting for Kenny Barron:
Kenny Barron: Who? Only one of the truly great living Jazz pianists, and one of my favourites. I’d not seen him for a while now – last in the Village Vanguard in New York, I think – so this performance brought back some happy memories too.
The crowd: Mostly members and guests of members of the excellent da Camera society, the chamber music society that arranges concerts in interesting and historic places around the city. I’ve mentioned them before.
The payoff: Great music, of course. Kenny came, Kenny played. Wonderfully, and generously (we had two sets of at least 50 minutes each, I think).
It was a fantastic show.
