Maneuvers in the Dark

fay_wolf_hotel_cafe_14_4_2011_smallBefore getting up in the wee hours to prepare to jump onto a plane on Friday morning, I was out seeing some live music at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. I find that I need to go and get some of that from time to time, and the Hotel Cafe is a favourite of mine for that…

I had my notebook and a nice vantage point for grabbing a quick sketch or two of people at the piano. It was a nice challenge to do a couple of fast sketches – in almost darkness – to see if my hand and eyes were still “in”.

As usual (I’ve discussed this earlier here) my goal on fast sketches is not photo-realism (!) but a sean_douglas_hotel_cafe_14_4_2011_small_2capturing of the gesture… the sense of the action/post going on…

So here are singer songwriters Fay Wolf (she was on at 9:00pm) and Sean Douglas (10:00pm). (Ball point pen, 3×5 notebook, about 5-7 minutes each, not counting background scribbles at end to frame…)

Today, back to work on The Project, after an uncomfortably long break…

“Maneuvres” indeed. What’s wrong with “manouevres”? You are, I fear, turning into … I can’t say it … An American. I’m working on a cure. Dijen

  5. Clifford says:

Yes, the spelling bothered me a lot, but went with it…

Dijen! Geez, how the devil are you?
