That does seem like a pretty odd statement from Weinberg. I'm doing my ungergrad research in condensed mattrer theory and I certainly feel like there is some "particle envy". Maybe envy is the wrong word, but a healthy level of respect since so much of the theoretical framework and mathematical techniques come from the particle crowd. Granted, I am pretty much exactly the 21 year old scientist you mentioned so my view on things may change quite a bit during the next few years.

Good informative speech from Mr. Weinberg. Though, due to the length of it, ( and my over the top excitement of this inauguration day! ) I was only able to scan it quickly and look forward to coming back to it with time to fully focus on the depth of information within the article.
There is so much exhilaration and joyful satisfaction, (to my mind and spirit) in exploring theory, both scientific and philosophical. The inter-connectedness of thought and action, is fascinating to study, in the context of how life began, evolved and moves forward to a greater understanding of our physical and spiritual existence.

Our Amazing Universe!
Every person, created from Every atom, proton, electron and void!
Completely Amazing!
