Some Saturday Shopping

Well, of course I made it to the Aspen farmer’s market. Why would I pass up the opportunity to pay $3.50 a pound for assorted squashes? (And that was some of the more reasonably priced stuff…) I like to support these things, and mingle with the people, so I go anyway. Also some of it is very good, even though there are very few actual fresh produce vendors compared to the farmer’s markets I’m used to in Los Angeles. (This latter fact is not entirely traceable, I think, to having a smaller target population, or being at high elevation.) (Of course there’s a lot of selling of knick-knacks of various sorts of the tourists…. you know: hand carved dual dog bowls with Western outdoor themes and so forth…)

Here’s the (half-folded) bike with some of my findings:

saturday pickings from the market in Aspen

You can get a closeup on the basket by clicking the image on the right. Some apricots, saturday pickings at the aspen farmer\'s market onions, zucchini, green beans, rosemary (I forgot to bring some of my huge supply from my garden) should be visible. Interestingly there was not anything close to a tempting (to me at least) tomato to be found. Just large round uninspiring (at the price) ones. (Drat! I forgot to get corn!)

I particularly like going to the guys who have all the different flavoured dry pasta. Lots of lovely colours. After a little banter, I managed to convince the fellow serving me that the (utterly ridiculous and and wasteful) rule he quoted that they will not mix them together in one bag (even though they are the same price by weight!) should be waived, and I’ve opened the bag up a bit here for you to see the fettucini and linguini I’ll be partly dining on all week.

Last year when my Special Libraries Assoc. was in Denver, my frequent coauthor Lorri and I rented a car and went to Aspen for the day and were there for the first day of the Farmer’s Market! We got veggies and fruit to eat there, and some cool handmade PASTA that we both brought home, it was WONDERFUL! Did you perchance see the pasta guy?

Yes, it is. I agree. Type Brompton into the search engine of the blog for several more posts involving it.

    Cheers,
