When my daughter was 3 (she's now 26), we went to L.A. to visit relatives. We told her that the sea was salty, so she announced her determination to "drink it all up." My brother and I held her hands as we walked in the sand toward the ocean. I scooped up some salt water in my hands and offered it to her. She took a sip, spit it out, and announced that she was no longer interested in drinking it all up--that one sip of salty water was enough for her. Three-year-olds don't understand the immensity of the ocean until the moment they realize they can't begin to drink it all up.
