When I moved to Waterloo last year, I drove from Santa Cruz to Ontario, and my first stop was in Nevada. I freaked out when I went to a restaurant, was surrounded by smokers and realized there was nothing I could do about it. I am glad that I was at least moving to a place that also has laws about smoking in public places!

And fair enough about the the "market" ... although it felt more like one before they built a mall with a trolley. Why the trolley?!? Gentrification in L.A. makes me so sad.

Oh feel blessed ye of California. In much of the Midwest smoking is not restricted even in bars and restaurants. This "freedom" to choose to harm oneself, and "assuming" that others are free to not be harmed (though of course there is some very respected research that identifies second hand smoke as having certain causal connections with health issues), encourages the smokers to avoid any sort of self-imposed conscious efforts to curtail the puffing of their toxins in the close and immediate presence of others. Worse, this form of socially accepted slow-death suicide further encourages those that are thus addicted to scatter the toxic and hazardous remains of their butts hither and thon across all the landscape.

They suggested [tex]rdrd\phi[/tex], but since it is liberal Santa Monica, they allow you the freedom to use your own coordinates.

did the fish have a say about it? There are even travel advices for smokers in California where you learn essential details about the designated smoking areas.

That place is nice, but it's not a farmer's market, despite the name. I'm talking about the real farmer's markets that I've blogged about here many times, such as the Hollywood, the Santa Monicas, etc.

There were shouting matches over the lighting up. Happily, no food fights, despite there being ammunition everywhere within easy reach. [update: sorry.... it was the Hollywood Farmer's Market where I saw this. Same place I saw a motorcyclist attempt to ride once... very appropriately got shouted at, since it's officially a pedestrian area when in use for the market.]
