Waiting for the Storm

No, not a metaphor. We’re really supposed to have a thunderstorm today. High probability they say. It’ll go up to the 80s and 90s again first, and then it’ll crack open…I hope. I’ve not seen rain for so long I’ve forgotten what it is like. Please let’s have some rain. We’ve seen three inches here in the last year (about 12 short of what it should be), and boy do we need it… (Apparently it’s all over in Europe. There are floods, I hear.)

So I sit here, trying to calculate, while hoping for rain – and a real grand-piano-falling-down-the-stairs thunderstorm!

Hey! I think I saw a lot of virga from my office yesterday! Before I had to close my blinds. Definitely no virga today.

I’d always thought of that phenomenon as Virgin’s Veils; doubtless some old English folk name. However google provides no hits which is a tad mystifying.

And for those (like me) who wondered what Sara T meant, see What is Virga?

    Thanks Sara T!

Good Lord… you’ve been watering them more than once per day? Actually, I can understand, since I’ve been under-watering I think: I may have lost one plant (the faithful one clinging to the crack in the stair that survived for so long – blogged about it earlier) and my yellow pear tomato has dozens of fruits and is struggling with both them and the heat…..

My new solution? Something I should have done long ago and in past seasons: shade mesh. I’ve made a big canopy or two to shade out the direct long periods of sun from the tomatoes and other delicates. Let’s hope they forgive me and recover.

    Cheers,

There may well’ve been virga, which fascinates me; didn’t know of this rain-not-reaching-the-ground phenomenon til studying aviation weather!
At least the humidity was higher today, and we only had to water the tomatoes once…

WHERE IS THE RAIN????? The sun finally broke through and has necessitated me closing my office blinds. Ah the travails of summer in LA.

  7. Clifford says:

No sign of the rain yet…. sigh….

Here in the east coast (Long Island) we should be having T-storms later too. I spent last summer at SLAC and did not saw any rain during the 8 weeks that I was there. OK, will not start complaining about the weather now and wish of being in Cali…
