[...] One of my favourite scenes from the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books earlier this year (I forgot to post these nearer the time). They’d set up giant crosswords at various points on the UCLA campus (where the Festival was held), and people gathered around and tried to solve them. I think this is a lovely idea!
[...] The Gravity Research Foundation announced its awards for the 2007 essay competition. (Hmm: I think we should have more technical science essays, in more categories, to inform each other about what the big questions and answers are…. and maybe even just for fun (because I’m in a silly mood) -and to make an important point about how vital it is to communicate what we’re up to to each other- have a swanky awards ceremony, with speeches, and music, and an MC, and everything. And of course it should be held somewhere in LA… Like the LA Times Book Awards. It could be held at the same time as (another fantasy): awards we give to our peers for the important task of writing essays, books and other efforts in the service of communicating science to the general public.)
I must admit i was just being snarky, realizing that in the past you have been more than willing to mention your attendence of events on that campus. The blessing of CSPAN is that i can attend various sessions (Politics and Religion was intense) all weekend. A quite remarkable collection of great authors.

Hi Spyder... It was only because I was in a hurry. I've no problem mentioning that it was at UCLA. It was, for example quite clearly mentioned in the post I linked to. I've updated. Thanks for pointing that out.

Cheers,

Oh Clifford, you are such the tease here in the photos, given the stage props. The most classic of Southern California late 50's/early 60's iconography laid out there for all to see, but not one pip of a word from you about it. Was it a homage to John Severson and his artistic and cultural gifts, or perhaps reflecting Rick Griffin's more emblematic of symbolic graphic explorations???

And i also note that as a good Trojan professor, you carefully avoid mentioning the actual location of the event itself; only surreptitiously alluding to your favorite drive east along the length of Sunset, and an East/West divide in LA (i suppose that Valley thang is just completely irrelevant?). Oh i am so reminded of that Jeane Emerson poem:

Hail to the hills of Westwood,
To the mighty sea below;
Hail to our Alma Mater,
She will conquer every foe.

For we’re loyal to the Southland,
Her honor we’ll uphold;
We’ll gladly give our hearts to thee,
To the Blue and to the Gold.
