[...] 4:35pm Check my phone messages, since I seem to have two! I’d not noticed them before, even though the machine is at arm’s length from me. They seem to be from me (momentarily weird voice until recognition sinks in) reminding me to send some emails concerning an upcoming campus event I’m organizing with KC Cole (Please come - “Point of View, II” see the earlier one here and here - details coming soon) and reminding me to meet with the student at 4:00pm.
[...] The next Categorically Not! is Sunday 25th March. The Categorically Not! series of events that are held at the Santa Monica Art Studios, (with occasional exceptions). It’s a series - started and run by science writer K. C. Cole - of fun and informative conversations deliberately ignoring the traditional boundaries between art, science, humanities, and other subjects. I strongly encourage you to come to them if you’re in the area. There’s a new website showing past and upcoming events here. You can also have a look at some of the descriptions I did of some events in some earlier posts (such as here and here), and the description of some of the recent special ones on Point of View and Uncertainty that I organized with K. C. as USC campus events (here, here (video) and here). [...]

[...] So, yes, it is a different world from mine, which is what I started out to say. But what of the “collision” to which I referred in the title of the post? Ah. Well, it nearly threw me off my seat when I dipped into Angeleno the other day, opening the February edition (featuring Christina Ricci, and who always makes me think of General Relativity whenever I see her) turning by accident to the “Calendar: Social Events” section (showing upcoming events) to find - among only eight events on that page - my USC event of a couple of weeks ago! How weird is that?! I wonder if anyone came to it as a result of reading that announcement? [...]

[...] Well, the video of the Point of View event of a couple of weeks ago is now available. Click here for streaming media. There’s a problem, however. While my opening off-the-cuff remarks are utterly unimportant, and so it is not a big deal that the audio of that is poor, the big problem is in the third segment. Apparently (according to the A/V person) the Bluetooth microphone that they were using to capture the sound for the video camera must have used up its battery, since all the audio for USC’s Cinematic Arts School’s Jon Boorstin’s wonderful tour of the issue of point of view (illustrated by a Hitchcock’s “Notorious”) is lost. This is a bit of a blow. [...]
