Stumbled on this quite by accident. Felt like a vacation just reading it. Thanks.

British food has always taken it on the chin in the US, and I don't think it is deserved at all. Gotten addicted to meat pies, and starting to see tarts like the ones shown here quite a bit about town these days.

How do you think all the new fancy American beers rate against the old traditionals from UK?

[...] I’d packed a sandwich, brought a book and an apple, and everything. On my way, I stopped at a store I regularly stop at to get the best deal in Santa Monica - the aforementioned simple jam tarts. A dollar apiece. I got two. Dessert, you see. They packed them into the usual pink box, and after getting a cup of coffee next door I wandered down to the pier, past the pier, and walked toward the area where all the chess tables are set up. Chess players were there, including many of the regulars I’ve seen at table before. I really love the idea of public chess areas in cities, where people can gather and engage in something that is primarily about thinking, first and foremost. There are lots of tables out with chess boards marked on them, and it is in a prime spot just off the “boardwalk”. [...]

[...] I’ve got to cross town later on to Pacific Palisades to a party, and while I’m keen on the party, I’m not keen on the journey - It is super hot outside, and I have to go via Santa Monica to pick up some tarts to take along. Temperatures are sure to go over 100oF again today, and so everyone and their dog will be heading West to the beach. [...]

[...] Finally, I’ve also noted a number of mentions of Durham on that same blog. One of them was apparently inspired by an earlier post of mine, and was in fact a sort of reply! Yes, it did make me have a bit of a longing to wander around Durham for some time. I hope to do so in the not too distant future, and perhaps see some of my old friends and colleagues there too. In the meantime, recent days have put me quite firmly in mind of Durham - it has been very cold here (by Southern California standards), with it approaching freezing each night. The days are strikingly cold while remaining super bright and sunny. Cycling to work in the morning and back at night requires a scarf, jacket, and a jumper/sweater - an unusual amount of warm clothing for this part of the world - and is quite a chilling experience for the lungs. This reminds me a lot of the Fall and Winter days of Durham - Cold, but lovely and clear. Well that’s what we have here in Los Angeles for while. All I have to do is find a street with cobblestones to walk along - and I’m sure they are not too far - and it’ll be just as though I’m there! [...]

[...] Professor Clifford Johnson’s blog post describing winter in Santa Monica has made me a bit homesick. So I’ll do my best to return the favor by putting up a few photographs of Durham University, where Dr. Johnson was previously before moving to USC. By the way, I’ve learned that it’s pronounced DAR’em, not DUR-um and certainly not like anything that rhymes with the name of US soccer player (’footballer’) Mia Hamm.
Americans can't ever have beans on toast! You need to put marmite on the toast before putting the beans on. Vital. Are you sure they have no marmite, flake, jam tarts or hobnobs? Perhaps they have them under a different brand name and you've not had time to search them out in WalMart or whatever?

With those kinds of clouds, you should be able to spot <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog" rel="nofollow">sun dogs</a>. Meanwhile, a ways up the Pacific coast from you, we just had a <a href="http://www.brannenworks.com/seawind06/" rel="nofollow">wind storm</a>.

Thanks for the reportage from some of my old stomping grounds. I guess that your comment about how squeaky clean and lifeless the place can be is best exampled by Shutters, once the home of junkies, a cult rehab center, then Pritikin, etc. The very sand you were walking on is laden with toxic materials and the storm drains still bring hazmat dangers each and every day to what "appears" to be tranquil nice water. But there really is nothing like those long tidal flats that come in the winter months from the more diverse seasonal tides, the silt from the winter storm surges, and the scouring of winds. Those sunsets, always golden during the winter months, are a wonderful reminder of some of the best days of my life. Thank you

Oooh, what great picutures! Normally, I would whinge about how ridiculous it is to call 70 degrees "winter," but I can't talk -- it's been in the 40s and 50s here for the last few days, and I must say that I'm enjoying it. ^_^

Of course, when Michigan's snow is gone forever -- along with the Ross ice shelf -- I know I'm going to miss it. :'(
