[...] Some interesting news in the outreach mission. From time to time, Asymptotia posts get picked up by some of the local blogs of note, such as LA Observed, and that’s just great, since many things I talk about here are right at the intersection of local interest and the arts and sciences, especially education (such as talking in a local school), events such as the Categorically Not! ones at Santa Monica Airport, and issues such as the environment, in addition to the pure fun stuff, and the tasty stuff. For example, Kevin Roderick at LA Observed was kind enough to mention the posts about the Griffith Observatory (the new relaunch, and the controversy about the use of actors in the planetarium show), judging at the Science Fair at the California Science Center, as well as the post on the open day at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory , and the post about cycling in the city in combination with public transportation, as an alternative to blindly using your car/SUV for most journeys.
[...] You may recall a post I did some time ago about a worrying development at Griffith Observatory, just before it reopened after the splendid three year refurbishment. (See here for my long post -with pictures- of my visit to the facility around the time of its reopening.) Various reports said that they’d decided to hire actors (not trained in the subject of astronomy) to largely replace the lecturers (trained in the subject of astronomy) for the new planetarium show. This seemed a very disturbing turn of events, and so I did the blog post about it. [...]

Gosh... did not go through and check stuff like that in detail.... might they have mentioned the rings in the written information on the displays? Or did they just not mention them at all? That would be a bit of a shame, if so.

Pegs? Not sure what you mean.

Thanks!

The Gunther Depths of Space may have accurately scaled models of the planets, but the only model displaying rings is Saturn. "Everyone" knows that Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus also have rings.

I was very disappointed to "discover" that the new Observatory exhibits were not current with the latest planetary information.

[...] As mentioned before, I am really excited about the re-opening of the Griffith Park Observatory. See this earlier post. [Update: See post about my viisit here.] I’d noticed (on their site) the employment notice: The Observatory will complete its four year renovation and expansion project in the Fall of 2006, with improvements including the new 200 seat Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon theater, doubling of the exhibit space to house more than 60 new and exciting exhibits, and new sound, lighting, interior dome and digital laser projection technology in the refurbished Samuel Oschin Planetarium theater. Employment opportunities will continue to increase as we approach our reopening date. [...]

Katie - Excellent suggestion! I think people will find that useful. After all, the "hike" is nothing more than a few minutes' stroll up a moderate hill.... well worth it to avoid the longer busride.

Cheers,

A friend of mine is in town for an astrophysics conference, so I took her to the Observatory on Sunday. I hadn't made reservations ahead of time, but fortunately they reserve a bunch of tickets for hikers and bikers (available 48 hours before your visit). When I checked out their website that morning there were plenty spaces open, so we parked at the Greek Theater and "hiked" up the road to the Observatory. Great option - I'd highly recommend it. And it's free (the $8 tickets just cover the cost of the tram system). I'm definitely taking my neice when she comes to visit.

[...] The innermost planet passes across the face of the sun, from our point of view. At USC the Physics Department’s Joe Vandiver will have a telescope set up on campus for you to sneak a peak, and I beleive that the solar telescope at the Griffith Observatory (see my earlier post) will have public viewing.
Hi Mary, Thanks! Yes....better.

Time for a holiday out West, then. There's even more to see than just the Observatory. For example, the other big icon in the same line of hills.... The Hollywood sign! ;-)

Ah, yes... there's also a ton of other stuff.

[...] Clifford at Asymptotia has posted his observations about the newly re-opened Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. It sounds great. Even before I decided that I actually did want to have a kid or kids, I thought that the fun part of being a parent would be taking the kid(s) to places like Griffith Observatory. (The non-fun parts plus my own insecurity were why I used to think I couldn’t handle parenthood.)
Hi Rena,

Please, go back and visit! And tell your friends about it. And have a picnic or a hike in the park some time too. We should visit these great spaces in our city, walk around them, meet each other, and reclaim our sense of community.

There's some lovely science to be found in the Observatory. I hope you enjoy it.

Yes, as with almost all the many pictures on the blog - I try and bring a few snaps of what I've seen to share with everyone - I use a very simple (and quite old, by today's standards) Canon powershot S230, a reasonable eye and a steady hand.

Best,

Thank you for the reporting on the Griffith Observatory. I haven't been there since I was a teenager. It's good to see the place again. It makes me want to go back and visit. Did you take all those pictures? They are really great. What kind of camera did you use?

The telescope diagrams were cool, but I am most partial to the HR diagram. Making the red giants HUGE is just such a nice touch.

Looks like they did a great job!

Very cool! I love the "how a telescope works" display... I never understood those diagrams as a child, and they still give me quite a bit of trouble, so it's nice to see an exhibit that does at least marginally better by actually showing the paths of light. I wish there were a better way, though!
