Queen’s Greatest Hits

No. Not Brian, Freddie, and the boys. Some other time. I’m talking about a different Queen, and different hits. Late Friday night I suddenly got in the mood to go to Amoeba to pick up this music:

 asha bhosle album cover

… and I’ve been listening to it exclusively since.

asha bhosleSince I first became conscious of who she was, as a result of the music in the film Lagaan (wonderful!), I’ve been an admirer of Asha Bhosle (find a truly dedicated admirer at this site). Her voice is truly transcendent. (She’s been referred to as the Queen of Bollywood, in case you’ve been smarting about the title of the post.) I’d been meaning for some time now to go and pick up this “Best of” album, since there are many songs on there which I knew of, even before I knew who she was…. nice to hear them all, and more.

Wonderful material to write a paper to, and/or for (ahem!) Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon…..

One of my secret hidden pleasures is late night TV watching of the satellite channel from India featuring Bollywood music videos. Now i discover that MTV is launching their own new channel featuring them, as well as other Asian material. They have said they will show lots of clips from the Fez World Sacred Music Festival now heading into its 12th year. If any of you ever get a chance to see this one, please make the effort; or at least catch the highlights tour that comes through the US once a year.

Navneeth… Yes, of course the cricket match was great! “Lagaan” is just about the only “sport movie I unreservedly enjoyed. Well, along with “Shaolin Soccer”. Yes, I do know about Lata Mangeshkar.

    Thanks!

So, did you enjoy the cricket part from Lagaan? 😀 Asha Bhonsle has also made some “pop” albums in the last decade, most of them being remixed versions of her late husband’s (R.D.Burman) biggest hits. If you love her voice, you must listen to her sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Try to get the recordings from a few decades ago, which is still revered by listeners all over India.

A ha! A Brimful of Asha on the 45! (what a great Cornershop song)
Speaking of Queen, though, there’s an interesting little article on Brian May in the latest ish of Physics World.
