I like that story. It is a pain to constantly have to replace hiking boots. Hiking can be an expensive recreation.

[...] Yesterday afternoon, feeling a bit down in the dumps for a variety of reasons, I decided to head for the hills to clear my head. A good hike often helps these things. My other mission was to begin the painful task of breaking in some new boots. The fantastic repair job that I got done on my faithful old boots that died last year (see here for the full report) held up marvelously, and in fact still holds up, but I will admit that they lost a fair bit of flexibility with the new sole, and although they are great for the medium grade sorts of hikes I do in the immediate surroundings, I’m not really sure that they’d be great on the longer ones. I have not taken them up Mount Wilson, for example. The repair extended their life for quite a bit longer, and they will still be useful, but I decided last week that I should start breaking in a new pair to last me (I hope) another 15 years or so. I decided to try to get something as close to the ones I had as before, and so the Asolo TPS 535s were the ones I got (supposedly the natural successors to my Asolo AFX 530s). So I laced them up (already unhappy with the wimpy laces they have as compared to the big rope-like ones on my old boots) and set off from the trailhead in Topanga. [...]

Go along Santa Monica Blvd., west... pass under the 405. Pass the amusingly named California Beemers on your right.... maybe go another few blocks. You'll see the store with the giant Boot car outside (if it is out that day), on the corner, also on the right side. Shoes, other leather goods, and other things in the window... I think that if you get to the cross street called Butler, you're a block or two too far.

The aftercare is good too... I took them back for a bit of a stretching (resoling can change the shape of a shoe) and they remembered me (I think) and were happy to look after them for free, and even offered for me to bring them back for more....

Tell them where you heard about them if you like!

Cheers,

Good story. I have the same pair, not quite a battered, but still in need of resole. I would appreciate the address. Could decipher from the picture.

Thanks,

[...] I had some errands to run out in Santa Monica, such as picking up my boots from that great boot repair place (where I’d dropped them off to get stretched a bit… the miracle repair I told you about before had resulted in them a bit stiff and slightly tighter on the slopes, and so I thought I’d try a stretching of a few days), and so this fit well. I figured I’d just stay there until the evening. [...]

Nick:- That's brilliant!! That mental picture kept me laughing for hours. Yes! I want a photo!

Jude:- Tested them out on Mount Hollywood the other day. Started out quite tight, which got me worried, but then they loosened up quite a bit..... not quite where I want them, and if need be I will take them to get stretched. But maybe another hike will do it. Noticed a slight movement on the gluing on one edge. Will keep an eye on it. I don't expect the fix to work for another 14 years. I'll see.

[...] I should go and cycle by the beaches or something, but it is way too hot to go out right now (although I managed to get a couple of hours of morning hiking in the park to test out my boots’ repair). So I’m going to hibernate for a while. Then I’ll do some physics. Plenty of time for holiday fun once the sun sets. [...]

hey Clifford

when my boots, according to my mum's discretion, get too old
to wear anywmore, she plants strawberries in them. due to
the "superb" state of hygiene in which they are kept, the strawberries
grow wonderfullly. just added a pair to the garden a month or so ago
I'll try and get a photo from her.

Re: the ridiculous slogans, I often wonder if it actually a full time job people have, to come up with those, after all we are practically surrounded by them. Furthermore, what kind of training does this take, and how much money does one earn etc. etc.

(my daughter just started reading, so she reads signs in the street, on the bus etc., which made me realize just how much of the writings around us is precisely this empty babble we are just trained to ignore...)

Yay.

I'm always for fixing things if possible rather than replacing them! We Americans are way too wasteful and way too attached to buying new stuff, which these days almost always seems to be cheap and shoddy quality.

It's great to find a true craftsman that can really do a wonderful job of repairing something old and valued for you!

Now to find someone who can do a decent job of banging out the dings on my Voyager and repainting it.....
